But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement." It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now. "I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul. "It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev." Photo: Getty Images R&B superstar Usher announced Friday (March 4) that he was donating to various charities proceeds from appearing at a private event at St. Barts linked to Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, according to a statement made to the Associated Press. The Grammy award winner's renouncement comes after similar announcements from singers Mariah Carey, Nelly Furtado, and Beyoncé, all of whom were revealed to have performed at private concerts linked to the Middle Eastern leader, who has faced open revolt and major political uprisings since February. "I am sincerely troubled to learn about the circumstances surrounding the Nikki Beach St. Bart's event that took place on New Year's Eve 2009," Usher said of the concert, at which he appeared alongside Beyoncé but did not perform. "I will be donating all of my personal proceeds from that event to various human rights organizations." Usher has already begun the process, having made a donation to Amnesty International, the AP reports. The exact size of the donation is not known. The New Year's Eve gig was reportedly for Moammar's fourth son Muastassim, who an unnamed music industry source told MTV News has a history of throwing lavish parties "jammed" with supermodels. Beyoncé, who sang at the event, donated all proceeds from her performance to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of the Haitian earthquake. "All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago," the "Halo" singer's publicist said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause." Singer Nelly Furtado tweeted February 28 that she plans to make similar amends. "In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy," she tweeted. "I am going to donate the $." The leader of Libya since a successful military coup in 1969, Gadhafi has reportedly lost control of much of his country as a result of widespread uprisings. Born Richard Preston Butler Jr., the former Florida A&M University student is now one of the music industry's most-sought-after singer/songwriters. After writing hits for Usher ("There Goes My Baby"), Beyoncé ("Sweet Dreams") and Diddy-Dirty Money ("Hello Good Morning"), to name a few, one of Rico's biggest hits to date is Kelly Rowland's "Motivation." "It came about in a truly organic way," Rico told Mixtape Daily of the Jim Jonsin-produced "Motivation." "We had this meeting in New York: myself and Sylvia [Rhone] and Kelly. And they just were saying, 'We need to find that single; we need that big single.' Everybody was asking for an uptempo, actually. "I flew down to Miami the next day, and that Tuesday, we got back in the studio, and Jim started playing these chords, and then coming up with these little sounds — the signature sounds that Jim comes up with. I just told him to lay it like a skeleton idea, and I jumped in the booth, and I started with the verse, and I kind of sang my way all the way through the record." Rowland, formerly of Destiny's Child, was in the studio while Rico was laying down the reference track and made her regard for the song known immediately. "Kelly was there and watched the whole process," Rico recalled. "As soon as I finished singing the demo, usually an artist wants to live with it or listen to it for a little while. She just said, 'I want to cut it right now.' So she jumped in the booth, and we cut the record." "Motivation" became the lead single for Rowland's third album, Here I Am, which was released in April. The song, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, features a verse from Lil Wayne. "Lil Wayne got out of jail a few days later, and as soon as he got out of jail, [Rowland] went to see him, and he jumped on it," Rico explained. "It was the most organized situation ever. It was nothing contrived about it." There's been nothing manufactured about Rico's accomplishments either. Starting his musical career as a rapper, he has signed former Roc-a-Fella rapper Young Chris to his Universal/Motown-distributed Division 1 label. After leaving Florida A&M to pursue music, Rico caught the attention of Usher, and penned songs for the R&B singer, including "Throwback." Other artists soon benefitted from his songwriting, including T.I., Pleasure P and Mario. Rico takes pride in being versatile with his talents, preferring not to make specific songs intended for specific artists only. "Sometimes, when you keep an artist in mind, you'll limit yourself," Rico explained. "You won't go a place that they probably would go because you're thinking, "Nah, she wouldn't say this," or "He wouldn't do this," or "He wouldn't say this," and "This melody is out of the way for them." "When I get a chance to just get into the studio and just write music and just produce music and sit at the piano and tell a guy where I want to hear the chords and create the progressions and just freely make music, it's a lot more fun." Lately, Rico has been back in the studio with Usher. In 2007, he was signed to the singer's former US Records via J Records. But his debut album was never released, and he and Usher went their separate ways. But as Rico become a songwriting force, the two eventually started working together again. The first song they recorded was the Grammy-winning "There Goes My Baby" from 2010's Raymond v. Raymond. Now, Rico is working on Usher's forthcoming album and embracing the pressure of surpassing its predecessor's platinum sales and critical success. "I feel like this is what separates the boys from the men," Rico said of working with Usher. "This week, we been creating records together. We had two mics, two headphones set up in the booth, and we just sit there and vibe out. "These first few days have been amazing. We got four records cut so far that sound super amazing. The passing of the torch was noted by Facebook's marketing director Randi Zuckerberg, who tweeted on Thursday, "Sorry, Gaga! As of today, Rihanna has passed Lady Gaga as the #1 most popular woman on Facebook." Of course Gaga still rules the roost on Twitter (with 11.6 million followers, she bests Rihanna, who is down at #13 in Twitter followers), where she was the first person to surpass the 10 million mark. And that's just one of the many records she's smashed on her way to the top. She can also breathe easier now that her personal YouTube channel has been restored after going offline earlier this week thanks to a copyright-violation issues. A YouTube spokesperson told MTV News that the takedown order was given after Gaga had accumulated an unspecified amount of copyright claims, which results in an automatic suspension of an account. The clip that appeared to trigger the suspension involved unauthorized posting of a recent performance from Japan involving the popular boy band SMAP, who appeared in a medley of Gaga tunes on a TV broadcast. Photo: MTV News 50 Cent is no stranger to controversy, and the G-Unit general has once again caused a stir with some early morning tweets saying he won't release another album on Interscope and threatening to leak Dr. Dre's new single "Psycho" later in the day on Wednesday (July 27). MTV News caught up with Fif last night in L.A., where he was on the set of G-Note recording artist Hot Rod's "Hot Girl" video. There was no sign of drama as 50 explained his plans for his Black Magic album, which he has recorded but scrapped in favor of a new untitled LP that he was hoping to release this year. "No, it has a whole new title. It's a whole different energy," 50 said of his upcoming fifth studio album. "The Black Magic music, I have it, and I'll probably use it in, maybe, a film project." Now it seems as if Fif won't be releasing either album, judging from tweets that he began firing off shortly after midnight Pacific time. "Man I'm not releasing a album. I can't believe Interscope is this f---ed up right now. I apologize to my fans," he wrote. "I will work with other artists on their projects but I will not put out another album. They dropped the ball with me one time too many." Things didn't end there, with 50 then threatening that he would be "putting out" Dr. Dre's next Detox single on Wednesday in retaliation against Interscope. "You're gonna love it, it's a big song. I just don't think it deserves a great setup since they can't seem to get it right when it comes to me," he tweeted. This is not the first time that Fif used the social medium to voice his displeasure with his label. On June 16, the multiplatinum rapper took issue with the speed in which Interscope was moving when it came to the setup for his next album. "OK I tried to be cool with my record company. I went to the meeting, talked to everyone and sh-- feels like they're moving in slow motion," he tweeted. "I'm sorry to announce I will not be releasing a new album this year if we don't get on the same page." Soon after, he fired off, "My whole career iv been doing sh-- and they have been playing catch up. This is the last f---ing album. THEY BETTER WAKE UP AND WORK." The next day in an interview with MTV News, 50 opened up about his Twitter rant, saying that he didn't blame Dre (to whom 50 is signed) or Interscope head Jimmy Iovine personally, but rather the individuals at the label who are given the task of handling the rapper's work. "It's not necessarily Dre or Jimmy, it's more the guys that they pass the responsibilities onto," he said. "It takes longer for people, because they'll be like, 'OK, we're gonna do this and we're gonna do that,' and the building will start having those conversations, but they're not actually moving at that point." A new 50 track called "I'm On It" made its way onto the Internet early Wednesday morning, but there is no word whether that song was slated to appear on the MC's album, which is now in limbo. "We were lucky enough to get Mick's endorsement [for the video], as far as him giving us access to a bunch of different footage that's so cool," Levine explained. "Not many people have seen [it], especially a newer generation of people that don't know so much about how incredible he was." The hit NBC reality singing show that wraps its first season run on Wednesday will reportedly send its finalists on tour this summer for a string of dates featuring amateur vocalists Frenchie Davis, Beverly McClellan, Vicci Martinez, Dia Frampton, Nakia, Xenia, Casey Weston and Javier Colon, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unfortunately for fans of the show who have fallen in love with the chemistry of celebrity judges Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, the stars will not be joining their protégés on the road. Quoting multiple unnamed sources, THR said that tour producer Live Nation negotiated to have the foursome join the outing, but talks broke down over compensation. Though an official announcement about the tour has not yet been released, both Levine and Shelton have tweeted about the proposed outing, with the Maroon 5 singer enthusing in a since-deleted post, "LevineTeam members @Javstwtr and @casey_weston are hitting the road in July for #TheVoice Live on Tour. Go check them out. You can thank me later." Shelton added, "I feel like a proud papa with my two girls @DiaFramps and @X3NIA17 hitting the road this summer for The Voice Live on Tour. Show 'em love!"
